What is an Asthma
Attack
Asthma is a lung condition that affects the airways of your
lungs, and which as a result causes the tissues lining the
airways to swell and become narrow, making it difficult for the
person to
breathe.
There are many common symptoms associated with asthma and an
asthma attack, including coughing, wheezing, and shortness of
breath. There are different types of asthma attacks that one
can experience, from an acute asthma attack to a chronic asthma
attack condition, acute meaning they come out of nowhere and
chronic meaning that you have suffered from them for an
extended period of time in your life.
What Happens During an Attack
During an asthma attack, your asthma symptoms become worse
than usually, and muscles around the airways tighten up making
the airways even narrower than normal so that little to no air
can get through. This is considered as being a major medical
emergency, and if you are ever experiencing one of these
attacks it is crucial that you get in to your doctor or the
hospital as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that each asthma attack is different, some are
worse than others, and some asthma attacks can even be deadly.
You will need to learn about the different factors that cause
you to have an asthma attack, so that you can avoid them as
much as possible in the future and keep your asthma under
control as best you can.
Management
There is no cure for asthma, at least
not yet, and so proper management of the disease is imperative
if you want to maintain your health and avoid asthma attacks.
Taking care of your asthma is going to be a major part of your
life and ensure that you have as few asthma attack episodes as
possible.
You will need to talk to your doctor so that they can
explain to you more about your condition, assess the severity
of it, and teach you how to stay away from things that bother
your airways. They may also suggest that you start on
medication for your asthma, such as bronchodilators which
typically come in the form of an inhaler and which you are
supposed to take when your asthma symptoms start acting up.
You may not be able to get rid of your asthma but you will
be able to prevent an acute asthma attack episode by
learning more about asthma as a disease and avoid triggers that
aggravate your asthma.
